The weather was pretty nice in the days leading up to the field trip, but we woke up to rain and chilly temps. We all met up at the school and the chaperones were supposed to follow the buses through the gorge but we hit morning rush hour and I got every red light and further and further behind! I was a little worried because the buses were splitting up at the dam and I wasn't sure which area my little group was going to first, but I finally caught up with them at the bottom of the exit!
We started out at the fish hatchery which was pretty empty at this point in the year but still interesting. Apparently we were expecting to have a guided tour, but when we got there they handed the teachers a stack of brochures and said it's a self-guided tour! I had Sierra and her friend Stephanie with me, along with Roxie and Rachel. The S's had a good time laughing, taking pictures, and fighting with their (broken) umbrella. The R's had less of a good time. They spent their time in various bathrooms, and saying things like "I hate this field trip!" and "I'm hungry, when's lunch?" They were good though and I think everyone had at least a little bit of fun. The best part was probably the Sturgeon viewing pond and the little ponds where you buy fish food and feed the fish...all the girls liked that part.
After that we switched places with the other group and toured the dam. This was the part I was looking forward to the most. We had an actual tour guide for this and she was great! She was fun and funny and informative. Sierra really enjoyed her. We got to see the turbines, both old and new, and the fish ladder from inside. As the guide was giving her talk we could see salmon swimming past the windows! Sierra (and her classmates) had a great time and we added a squashed penny to our collection!
